We are going to talk about the mental game of golf to help you lower your golf score.

To many people let their brain get in the way. Now, I know everyone has their own little demons running around in their heads and golf bags. Oh! No! Water, why is my 5 iron DYSLEXIC? How’s my grip, do my clothes match?

There is just way too much stuff running through our heads.

One simple key thin that you can do to help lower your golf score is relax and swing.

If you hit it offline, forget about it and hit the next shot better. You have to be able to have instant amnesia, because the more you think about that last slice, chili dip, fat, duck hook. The more chances it will happen again, soon! If you can forget about that last one and think about the next one, the better you will golf and the lower your will score.

I don’t mean to start thinking about your grip, stance, alignment and stuff like that.

Start thinking about your pre-shot routine. Picture what you want to do with the ball, are you going to fly it all the way back to the pin, are you going to land it on the front of the green and let it roll back to the pin?

Once you decide the type of shot you want to hit, visualize it happening in your minds eye. Now step up and hit your shot and see how many times the ball goes exactly the way you pictured it…The golf sing consists of over 10,000 muscles and tendons and they need to be programmed to complete the shot…so picture the shot…every shot…then step up to the ball and swing…

I see so many people just standing there over their ball with all those demons running in one ear and out the other. Sometimes it’s funny to watch when it’s your best friend and he has a hard time breaking 100. My normal response is it took you that long to hit that!

Now, I am not a self proclaimed pro golfer. I am about a 7-8 handicap and I have played with a lot of different people over my 50 years of golf and one of the comments I get allot of the time is, you sure don’t take long to hit your shots. I just tell them that you should already know where and how you want to hit your golf shot when you step up to the ball.

Pretty simple, huh! When I have made that suggestion to people it has probably worked at least 75% of the time. The other 25% are un-helpable! This is just one simple tip that I think can help most amateur golfers lower their golf score.

Drive For Show-Put For Dough

Golf is just an amazing game and after 53 years of golf I have heard the term “drive for show, put for dough” at least a 1000 times.

There are so many cliche in the game of golf and knowing each of them helps to bring more enjoyment when talking with other golfers.

So let’s break down the actual meaning of this golf cliche “drive for show put for dough”.

One of the biggest pleasures is to Stand on a Tee-box and swing with all your might and see your ball fly down the fairway 300 yards, or more. Especially when you drive is 50 yards farther down the fairway than the rest of your foursome. You know have bragging rights.

Now let’s say on that same par 4 hole you hit your 110 yard second shot straight into the greenside bunker, blow your sand shot 15 feet by the hole and 3 put for a double bogey 6.

Well, all that excitement of that 300-yard drive has long been since forgotten as you walk back to the cart scratching your head.

Now, lets take the same golf hole, same foursome. “George”, let’s say for example hit his drive 250 yards down the fairway and hits his second shot of 160 yards to within 18 feet of the pin. Waits for the other players to get inside his ball. He also waits while you blow your sand shot by the pin. George, then steps up to his ball and 2 putts for a par four and win the money you bet him on the hole.

George, also adds insult to injury as he walks back to his golf cart saying, “That was a great drive on that hole, it must have gone over 300 yards” smiling from ear to ear as he counts up the money he won on that hole.

So, you see the longest drive might give some great excitement, but doesn’t always win the money.

In parting I would just like to say, the game of golf is like the game of life “ May your drives be long and straight and may all your short putts go in.
